Fire safety is essential for all of us, whether at
home or the office. While older buildings may be harbingers of greater
fire hazards due to faulty wiring systems and fewer safety features,
even newly constructed homes and buildings can hold hidden danger.
It is a good idea to perform a fire risk assessment on a regular
basis to ensure the safety of the building and its inhabitants.
Professional safety consultants will evaluate
the building to ensure that it meets current fire safety guidelines
and that there are sufficient fire detectors inside. They can
do an annual fire extinguisher inspection and issue the necessary
certificate that indicates that the unit works correctly.
As part of the assessment, the consultant may
recommend additional fire safety equipment such as installing
a carbon monoxide sensor on each level of the building or even
a smoke detector camera. They may suggest using safety signs to
remind individuals about the safe handling of any hazardous materials.
It is just as important to do a regular evaluation
of fire safety equipment and training in your home. Be certain
that the equipment works as it should and take your fire extinguisher
in for service, or replace it, if there appears to be an issue
with its operation. It is a good idea to install two types of
smoke detectors. Smoldering fires such as those caused when cigarettes
come in contact with furniture are better detected by the type
of sensor called a photoelectric smoke detector. The other option
is an ionization smoke detector which usually activates when there
is a greater risk of larger flames as can happen with kitchen
fires.
It is an alarming home safety statistic that most
residential fires could have been prevented if there had been
better fire safety equipment in the home. Take the time to asses
the risk of fire in your house. Make sure you have enough detectors
and other safety equipment. You and those you love are worth it.
