Residential fire alarm systems can range from
a basic battery-powered smoke or heat detector that sound a piercing
alarm when the sensor is activated or they can be wired into the
burglar alarm system for twenty-four hour monitoring. Either way,
fire detectors offer effective protection against death or injury
due to a house fire. The sooner the alarm signals the risk of fire,
the better the chances that everyone in the house will survive the
blaze. However, there are other ways to quickly extinguish the flames
before the fire gets out of hand.
Much media attention was has focused on new home
construction and implementation of legislation requiring the installation
of mandatory fire sprinkler systems. Sprinklers have been proven
to virtually eliminate loss of life in home fires and reduce property
damage considerably. A popular misconception is that every sprinkler
in the home will go off in the event of fire, thereby causing
unnecessary water damage. However, these systems are heat activated
and only shower the room that has reached a high enough temperature,
usually around 155 degrees Fahrenheit. Flames can be extinguished
in seconds, often before fire fighters arrive on scene.
Regardless if you choose a basic fire alarm or
more expensive sprinkler system, there are other ways to protect
your family from hidden dangers. Carbon monoxide alarms can signal
the presence of dangerous fumes, including propane or natural
gas. It is easy to purchase an affordable smoke detector that
includes a carbon monoxide sensor in the unit. If you have small
children in the house, you can help protect them by installing
a camera unit in the smoke detector in their bedroom, or elsewhere
in the house. This type of hidden camera allows you to keep an
eye on your childs nanny while you are out of the house.
Protecting your home and family includes several
key components, just a few of which have been discussed in this
article. Buy the best quality home safety equipment that you can
afford. While sprinklers may seem like an expensive option, they
do add to the resale value of your home. If you do go ahead and
install a sprinkler system, ensure the house still has some type
of fire alarm and gas detector. There is no single solution to
fire safety, so make sure you cover all the bases.
